Thibaut Courtois about Ballon d’Or

As a rule, no one should be dissatisfied in Real Madrid after the “Golden Ball” award – Karim Benzema won the main award, Thibaut Courtois was named the best goalkeeper, and was given the Lev Yashin prize. The keeper of Real Madrid beat Allison and Ederson.
Nevertheless, the Belgian did not seem completely satisfied. Courtois did not hide why he was upset: he did not like the fact that he ended up “only” in 7th place in the Ballon d’Or ranking – despite having a brilliant season and winning three important titles. Courtois noted that goalkeepers in the “Ballon d’Or” fight have almost no chance compared to field players.
“To be honest, I think it’s impossible for a goalkeeper to win the Ballon d’Or,” Courtois told the Spanish TV station RTVE, “Obviously, Benzema deserved the main award. We’re all happy with that and we all agree, but when a goalkeeper wins the Champions League and the championship, when that goalkeeper’s team wins the Champions League final with his saves… only seventh place? It is also worth noting that the defender did not make it into the top ten.”
Let us remind you that 30-year-old Courtois played particularly well in the Champions League final and set a record with 9 saves. “To be honest, I thought I would be in the top 5 at least. I want you to get me right. A goalkeeper can’t do more than I did. “Forwards and attackers usually win the Ballon d’Or,” added Courtois.
Indeed: since the Ballon d’Or has been awarded, only one goalkeeper has won this prestigious award. This was achieved in 1963 by Lev Yashin, whose name is today the name of the best goalkeeper category.
