EuroBasket 2022 – France beats Hungary
Hungary had a great first half in Cologne, trying to make a comeback in the game’s last minutes. France first had a solid lead in the third quarter (25-14). After that, they were able to keep everything under control for a 78-74 win. This was available thanks to Rudy Gobert’s display (15 p. 9 r., 6/9 FG).
With the result, France went 2-1 up in Group B, finishing behind unbeaten Germany. Hungary is winless at 0-3, as is Lithuania.
The new Minnesota Timberwolves player had his best EuroBasket 2022 performance, leading his team to the final victory. He was joined by Evan Fournier (12 p., 5 a.) and by the other two French bigs. Vincent Poirier (10 p., 5 r.) and Guerschon Yabusele (17 p., 6/8 FG, 4/4 FT).
On the other side, Adam Hanga (18 p. 4 r. 3 a.) came back stronger after missing the game against Slovenia with a hamstring injury. Mikael Hopkins had 10 points but had a rough night as well. He struggled in shooting (2/9 FG) and holding Rudy Gobert as inactive as possible.
Hungary survived until halftime, where the two teams closed the second quarter 42-39. Rudy Gobert began to dominate under the basket afterward. Here France bested their opponents in both rebounds (36 vs 25) and assists (24 vs 15). Hungary’s late comeback attempt was not enough.
France and Hungary and the other teams in Group B will have a day off tomorrow. Teams will be back in action on Tuesday against Bosnia and Herzegovina (2.30 pm) and Lithuania (5.15 pm), respectively. These two games will probably decide the “Group of Death” fate.
