Dutch Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen won the Japanese Grand Prix to claim his second consecutive championship with four races to go.
On the very first lap of the race, due to heavy rain, Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon collided, due to which the competition was stopped for 2 hours. It is worth noting that in the race held in Suzuki, the pilots did not cover 75% of the distance. However, Formula 1 gave full points to the racers, which was motivated by the fact that the pilots get part of the points if the race was stopped and not resumed, and the competition continued in Japan.
“It’s unbelievable. I have conflicting feelings. I think we had a great year, I couldn’t have imagined it. After the tense end of last season, this year we had a very cool car and we won. I thank everyone who contributed to our triumph,” said the champion.
Verstappen’s win last season
After the scandalous victory of Formula 1 in 2021, Max did not come close to anyone in the current season and won convincingly. Verstappen was the 17th driver in history to win the Formula 1 title at least twice and the 11th to win the championship two years in a row. Max has tied Fernando Alonso, Mika Hakkinen, Emerson Fittipaldi, Graham Hill, Jim Clarkson, and Alberto Ascari for the number of titles.
Max Verstappen won his 12th race this season. The record belongs to Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel – both Germans won 13 races in one season. Max needs 1 win in the remaining 4 races to repeat the record. Moreover, he will set a new record in case of two wins. It should also be emphasized that the Dutchman’s first place in Japan was the 32nd in his career. With this indicator, he equaled Fernando Alonso, ahead of Ayrton Senna (41), Alain Prost (51), Sebastian Vettel (53), Michael Schumacher (91), and Lewis Hamilton (103).
