Like football clubs, national teams of countries are also known by nicknames – ‘Three Lions,’ ‘Squadra Azzura,’ ‘Furia Roja,’ ‘Selecao,’ etc. Some nicknames accurately define the nation’s identity, while others are newly created and a bit artificial.
International football started in 1872 when Scotland hosted the English national team in Partick, the central area of Glasgow. At Partick, England, led by Cuthbert Ottoway, arrived with the 3-lion shirt on the heart, an image that has not changed for almost 150 years.
